First episode of Topman CTRL MX airs soon

Channel 4, February 10th, 00.10. Pen this date and time in your diary, sky plus it, tivo it, record it or whatever you want to do, just don’t miss it.

The brand new series of Topman CTRL MX is just around the corner and the first episode is going to be a barnstormer. Not giving too much away from the filming, but the acts really turn it on for this gig. Presented by Huw Stevens, it’s set in a grimy East London venue that looks so unfit for television that it works perfectly.

Miles Kane in particular really caught my eye, playing a collection of incredibly energetic and rugged tracks that will seriously whet your appetite for his forthcoming album. Already, his solo stuff looks like it’s going to blow Last Shadow Puppets out the water and he has shed any reliance on Alex Turner that some critics thought he had.

With TV debut performances from Pulled Apart By Horses and States Of Emotion as well, this is going to be a great show. And keep your eyes peeled for the Hotcakes boys in the background!

Hotcakes meets… Huw Stephens

Making the long journey up to the top floor of Topman on Oxford Street – a journey of countless escalators – gave me pause enough to think that this was a fairly odd place to be conducting an interview. As usual, the place was full to the brim with shoppers and had loud music thumping overhead. That is, I suppose, unless it’s an interview regarding a Topman associated event in which case it makes perfect sense. So here I was, in the relative calm that is the Style Lounge, meeting (probably) the nicest man in radio. Continue reading

Hotcakes favourite Topman CTRL is back, with a twist. Their brand new TV show, Topman CTRL MX, is appearing on Channel 4 with a series of live performances across February.

In the past, we have teamed up to bring you t-shirts by Professor Green and Filthy Dukes, a signed copy of The Charlatans new album and tell you all about Topman CTRL’s free 2010 tour.

Well, they return with a 6 part instalment of live shows every Thursday on Channel 4 from 10th February. The shows are going to boast the likes of Miles Kane, The Vaccines, Bright Eyes, Lykke Li, Gruff Rhys and The Joy Formidable.

To add that sumptuous list, Huw Stevens himself is getting involved, and keep your eyes pealed for an exclusive we have with him soon.

If you fancy a ticket to the show, try your luck on entering their competition over at Topman CTRL’s website.

We’ve got hold of an exclusive Topman CTRL T-shirt designed on behalf of October’s controller the Salford Lads Club, plus a signed copy of co-curaters, The Charlatans new album Who We Touch. The limited edition T-shirt will not be available in the shops but here’s your chance to get your hands on one!

Throughout October, the Salford Lads Club has taken over Topman CTRL and teamed up with The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess to curate the latest gig in the series.  It took place on 20th October at The Ruby Lounge in Manchester – in support were Factory Floor, Hatcham Social and The Heartbreaks with Tim Burgess and Mark Collins from The Charlatans headlining. Tim also took to the decks alongside New Order’s Stephen Morris with all proceeds from the night going to The Salford Lads Club.

To get your hands on the exclusive T-shirt AND the signed CD do one of the following:

We Are Scientists do Punch & Judy

Posted in Stream with tags , on 27 August, 2010 by Sim.R

Curators of this month’s Topman CTRL, Californian rockers We Are Scientists were let loose with a video camera and came up with some rather strange but comedic footage. If you’ve ever wanted to find out why they never gigged in Alaska or details of the band’s property aspirations in Riga, for example, then you’re in luck.

One of the more eccentric presentations included this Punch & Judy sketch which you won’t find on the official site. Enjoy!
