Pinch with Loefah & Roska

Dubstep sounds haven’t graced these pages for too long and just while I was thinking this, an excellent new cut arrives from Tectonic boss Pinch. Admittedly this was a week ago or so, but you come here for the quality of writing and sharp wit not the timing, right?

Pinch, real name Robert Ellis, teams up here with label mates Loefah and Roska which instantly bodes well given their respective back catalogues. The Roska collaboration on side A, ‘Broken’, is a brooding, melodic number that takes its lead from a low-end synth and some repetitive, yet strangely addictive percussion. Eerie vocals echo and repeat in the background and that theme continues on the reverse. ‘Paranormal Activity’, sees Loefah come on board to help craft an equally eerie track; not unsurprising given its title.

This release underlines the strength of Tectonic as a label that has such consistently high quality output in an overcrowded genre. Its importance to the pioneering Bristol dubstep and bass scene, that has been so crucial to the genre’s wider success, is well documented and it’s pleasing to see that their releases continue to be something to look forward to and savour.

Broken / Paranormal Activity is out now on Tectonic.
