Jamie Smith, better known to you and me as Jamie xx, released his debut album today: a compete remix of Gil Scott-Heron’s 2010 album I’m New Here. The re-fixed version, We’re New Here, is a journey through the minds of two people separated not only by age – 39 years to be precise – but stylistically too. Gil, a modern jazz and blues legend; Jamie, one of the best young electronic producers around.
The pair have only met briefly and have exchanged thoughts on the project by handwritten letter; a surprising, yet revealing, departure from Jamie’s usually electronic approach to his work.

Aside from working on his first solo LP, Jamie xx has been busy delivering separate remixes for a number of top acts including Adele, Falty DL, Florence and the Machine, Glasser and Jack Penate. He’s released original material too, just the other day we were treated to a new track called ‘Beat For’. In short, the young man is prolific.
Remember, it was only in 2009 that The xx burst onto the scene with their Mercury Prize-winning debut album.
